Redefine 2009: February Focus in Review

February’s Focus was to redefine my computing set up and get around to all the small tasks I’ve been meaning to do.  After testing some things out, some stuff worked out better than others, but I still was able to do a lot to improve my precious machines.

Here’s what I did:

• Purchased a Macbook Pro.
• Decided on how I would use my 4 computers:
  • Work laptop is for work.
  • Primary desktop is for 99% web-based use.
  • Secondary desktop is a media/back-up server.
  • Macbook Pro is for design and video editing.
• Set up my computer to save energy but to be able to Wake-on-LAN.
• Create an alarm to wake  me up with music and the weather.
• Customized iGoogle and made it more productive.
• Filtered Lifehacker feeds to only those I’m interested in.
• Added taskbar shuffle for when I want to reorganize my taskbar.
• Set up synchronization of my calendar to Google Calendar.
• Added Google Mobile to my phone and synchronization to my Google Calendar.
• Set up the Xbox 360 to stream video from my computer.
• Created a default shortcut to launch multiple instances of Firefox.
• Added badges to my Firefox tabs.
• Limited the amount of RAM Firefox uses.
• Set Gmail to be my default mailto link.
• Set up automatic back-ups for all of my media and documents.
• Added encryption to the few very important documents I have.
